Britt G. Hallqvist, née Nyman, was born in Umeå and grew up in Visby, Sweden. She earned a master's degree in philosophy and made her literary debut with the publication of Rappens på Blåsopp in 1950. She wrote rhymes and jingles, fairy tales, and stories for children and books for adults, but her reputation has mainly been based on her translations of adult and children's classic literature. In 1939, she married Sten Hallqvist, a clergyman and teacher, with whom she had four children.
