Fantastic beyond measure. ( )

I really wanted to love this book... but I can't.

It's the weakest of the three, and instead of an epic finish to an epic fantasy, it just wandered out with a whimper.

The authour just keeps pulling characters out of thin air to make a point with, then slots them back on the rack until he needs them later. It's book three by now for goodness sakes, enough setup and world building and start exploring consequences. Almost all the characters feel like a means to an end instead of friends and enemies in a shared journey. Even the ones that are bigger than life and so vivid in book one like the armoured bears and Lee are shadows of their former selves here (pun intended.

If you've read this far you'll have to finish the series, just don't expect too much. Barely a three based more on the better earlier books setup than the actual work in this one. ( )

Het is een mooie serie, intrigerend en goed geschreven, maar hier en daar toch echt wat ongeloofwaardig. Het einde vind ik echt heel mooi. Niet alles koek en ei, triest en toch hoopvol.

De beesten van Mary vind ik erg interessant en een grappige uitwerking van de evolutietheorie.

Het vechten tegen een god, hoewel niet zozeer tegen god, maar tegen een engel die de boel heeft overgenomen en een veel grotere rol wil spelen in het lot van individuele mensen en de mensheid als geheel is een interessant thema. Eerlijk gezegd zou ik ook tegen zo'n figuur in opstand komen als ik de kans had. Ik hoop alleen dat ik dan niet zo meedogenloos met andere levens om zou springen.

Wat ik ook een mooi thema vind zijn de grote hoeveelheid ongezonde ouder-kind relaties in de serie. Dat intrigeert me mateloos. Zeker ook de hele tegenstelling tussen volwassenen en kinderen en de uitwerking daarvan. Een psychiater zou er een flinke taak aan hebben om dit uit te pluizen volgens mij.

Esta serie es tan compleja y se cuenta de una forma tan intensa que a ratos da vértigo. Hay de todo, crítica a la religión, brujas, universos paralelos, espantos, inframundo, magia, física, ciencia; es simplemente maravilloso. ( )
