I picked this in October as it's my kid brother's birthday at the end of the month. I wasn;t stunningly impressed to be presented with a younger brother. When Mum was pregnant with him my grandad (a great practical joker) offered me 3 options:
1) it might be a little girl and I'd have a baby sister.
2) it might be a little boy and I'd have a baby brother.
3) or it might be a donkey and I could ride that on the foreshore.
I give you one guess which option I wanted, hence my subsequent disappointment.
Books that feature siblings don't usually offer the donkey option. >:-(
Some ideas are offered, feel free to pick from this lot or chip in with other ideas.
There's a series My Naughty little Sister Book 3, When my Naughty little sister was good always struck me as improbable!
The Five Children and It are siblings, as are at least some of The Famous Five and The Secret Seven
Topsy and Tim are twins
Sometimes a lone child comes across a family and settles in. Harry Potter and the interaction with the Weasleys springs to mind here.
A search throws up What Brothers do best which I find hard to believe is based in fact, while What Sisters do Best must be a massive book >;-)
There are an increasing range of books for an older sibling to introduce them to the idea of a new baby - again, not a donkey in sight.
Possibly at the later age group end Little Women has to fit here, as would at least some of the Narnia series, The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe does for sure.
And just for a laugh, me and my baby brother.

Love the photo! I have at least one similar to that with my younger brother. :-) (70s colouring and all!)
Options for me:

Wonderful opening, Helen. Love the photo and the story of the three options!
I'm planning to read The Case of the Missing Marquess by Nancy Springer featuring Enola Holmes, sister of Sherlock and Mycroft.

I'm thinking about reading or listening to The Vanderbeekers and the Hidden Garden by Karina Yan Glaser

I think I'll read Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. While looking through library books I saw one with smelly feet in the title and it caused me to think of my brother...I may have to go back and see if I can find it!

I have The Not Just Anybody Family by Betsy Byars on my shelves, that should work.
And maybe I can find the final Penderwicks book, The Penderwicks at Last. There are LOTS of siblings in that series!

I am going to read Last Chance which is the second book in the Rain Brothers duology.

I have yet to do the final re-read of The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew, so now is another opportunity!

I think I will read Where the Heart Is by Janet Lambert. I received a lovely old copy of this book from a lady whose mom taught elementary school, and they gave me her classroom library collection of books. I just rediscovered it on my shelves. It is about a family who lives in a remodeled barn.

I highly recommend one of my all-time favorites -
The Exiles by Hilary McKay, winner of the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize.
Laugh-out-loud antics of four sisters you'll never forget.
For everyone who loves books.

I have completed my read about the Rains brothers with Last Chance. A rather predictable post-apocalyptic thriller.

I completed The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew. Enjoyed it as a child, too sweet now!
