Three Texas women are sued for wrongful death after allegedly helping friend obtain abortion medication
In the first lawsuit of its kind since Roe v. Wade was overturned, a husband seeks damages from women who allegedly helped his ex-wife obtain the medications to terminate her pregnancy.
Eleanor Klibanoff | March 10, 2023

...The friends texted with the woman, sending her information about Aid Access, an international group that provides abortion-inducing medication through the mail, the lawsuit alleges. Text messages filed as part of the complaint seem to show they instead found a way to acquire the medication in Houston, where the two women lived.

A third woman delivered the medication, the lawsuit alleges, and text messages indicate that the wife self-managed an abortion at home.

...The lawsuit relies heavily on screenshots from a group chat the ex-wife had with two friends seemingly seeking to help her terminate her pregnancy...

(Marcus) Silva is asking a Galveston judge to award him more than $1 million in damages and an injunction stopping the defendants from distributing abortion pills in Texas...represented by Jonathan Mitchell, the former Texas solicitor general and architect of the state’s prohibition on abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy, and state Rep. Briscoe Cain, R-Deer Park...

An All-Republican State Supreme Court Unanimously Protects Abortion Rights

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2023/03/republican-north-dakota-supreme-cour...

Chief Justice Jon J. Jensen noted that the state constitution grants all residents the right “of enjoying and defending life and liberty” and “pursuing and obtaining safety and happiness.” These guarantees “implicitly include the right to obtain an abortion to preserve the woman’s life or health,” Jensen wrote. When the state classifies emergency abortions as de facto criminal unless proven otherwise, it deprives patients of “a right to enjoy and defend life and a right to pursue and obtain safety.” The chief justice backed up this conclusion by pointing out that North Dakota expressly permitted abortions to protect life or health in 1887, before it became a state, and preserved this exception in a series of statutes passed after its admission to the union in 1889. The right is thus “deeply rooted in North Dakota’s history and culture,” a key component of “ordered liberty before, during, and at the time of statehood.”

Cruel. Can you imagine the terror of a little girl whose first period begins at school, without preparation, teachers unable to explain? At best older students might "explain"?

Florida GOP bill would ban girls from talking about their periods in school
Ken Tran | March 19, 2023

...medical providers...recommend talking to children about puberty and changes in their bodies before they occur...

...House Bill 1069 would only permit “instruction in acquired immune deficiency syndrome, sexually transmitted diseases, or health education” only in grades 6 through 12.

...First periods typically start between ages 10 and 15, but can begin as young as 9 years old. That means a student could likely be in third grade up to tenth grade, or later, when a period begins.

...“Does this bill prohibit conversations about menstrual cycles because we know that typically, the age is between 10 and 15,” (Democratic state Rep. Ashley Gantt) asked. “So if little girls experience their menstrual cycle in fifth grade or fourth grade, would that prohibit conversations from them since they are in a grade lower than sixth grade?”

(Republican state Rep. Stan McClain) confirmed that the bill’s language would do exactly that: “It would” McClain responded...

Idaho Is About To Become The First State To Restrict Interstate Travel For Abortion
A bill would create a whole new crime — dubbed “abortion trafficking” — which aims to limit minors’ ability to travel for abortion care without parental consent.
Alanna Vagianos | Mar 28, 2023

...House Bill 242, which passed through the state House and is likely to move quickly through the Senate, seeks to limit minors’ ability to travel for abortion care without parental consent. The legislation would create a whole new crime — dubbed “abortion trafficking” — which is defined in the bill as an “adult who, with the intent to conceal an abortion from the parents or guardian of a pregnant, unemancipated minor, either procures an abortion … or obtains an abortion-inducing drug” for the minor. “Recruiting, harboring, or transporting the pregnant minor within this state commits the crime of abortion trafficking,” the legislation adds.

Abortion trafficking would be a felony, and those found guilty would face two to five years in prison. The legislation also includes a statute allowing the Idaho attorney general to supersede any local prosecutor’s decision, preemptively thwarting any prosecutor who vows not to enforce such an extreme law.

Since the bill would criminalize anyone transporting a pregnant minor within the state to get an abortion or to obtain medication abortion, it could apply to an aunt who drives a pregnant minor to the post office to pick up a package that includes abortion pills. Or it could target an older sibling who drives a pregnant minor to a friend’s house to self-manage an abortion at home. Either violation would carry a minimum sentence of two years in prison.

The legislation doesn’t actually say anything about crossing state lines, but Republican lawmakers are creative. Most pregnant people in Idaho are not traveling to obtain an abortion elsewhere in the state, since nearly all abortions are illegal in Idaho; they’re traveling to the border with the intent of crossing state lines, likely into Washington, Oregon or Montana, to get an abortion there...

Most teenagers and adolescents voluntarily include at least one parent in abortion decisions. But for the minority of those who don’t, it’s often for good reason. Studies show that requiring parental involvement can increase the risk of harm or abuse, delay care and lead minors to seek out dangerous alternatives...

...parental consent laws are common. Currently, 36 states require some kind of parental involvement for a minor to receive abortion care. Almost all of those states have a judicial bypass process that allows a minor to obtain approval from a court without alerting their parents, although this procedure is time-consuming and confusing, and it puts up many logistical barriers for young people who have few resources...

Anna Arutyunyan et al. 2023. Spatial multiomics map of trophoblast development in early pregnancy. Nature (29 March 2023) https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-05869-0

Abstract
The relationship between the human placenta—the extraembryonic organ made by the fetus, and the decidua—the mucosal layer of the uterus, is essential to nurture and protect the fetus during pregnancy. Extravillous trophoblast* cells (EVTs) derived from placental villi infiltrate the decidua, transforming the maternal arteries into high-conductance vessels1. Defects in trophoblast invasion and arterial transformation established during early pregnancy underlie common pregnancy disorders such as pre-eclampsia2. Here we have generated a spatially resolved multiomics single-cell atlas of the entire human maternal–fetal interface including the myometrium, which enables us to resolve the full trajectory of trophoblast differentiation. We have used this cellular map to infer the possible transcription factors mediating EVT invasion and show that they are preserved in in vitro models of EVT differentiation from primary trophoblast organoids3,4 and trophoblast stem cells5. We define the transcriptomes of the final cell states of trophoblast invasion: placental bed giant cells (fused multinucleated EVTs) and endovascular EVTs (which form plugs inside the maternal arteries). We predict the cell–cell communication events contributing to trophoblast invasion and placental bed giant cell formation, and model the dual role of interstitial EVTs and endovascular EVTs in mediating arterial transformation during early pregnancy. Together, our data provide a comprehensive analysis of postimplantation trophoblast differentiation that can be used to inform the design of experimental models of the human placenta in early pregnancy.

Fig. 1: Trophoblast cell states in the early maternal–fetal interface. ( https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-05869-0#Sec2 )

Fig. 3: Benchmark of EVTs derived from primary-derived trophoblast organoids and TSCs. ( https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-05869-0#Sec5 )

Discussion
In the postimplantation embryo, trophectoderm* differentiates into trophoblast that invades the uterus to transform the maternal arteries. Defective trophoblast invasion is the primary underlying cause of the great obstetric syndromes that include pre-eclampsia, fetal growth restriction, unexplained stillbirth, placental abruption and preterm labour2. We made use of a historical collection of first-trimester pregnant hysterectomies to delineate the trophoblast landscape at the implantation site, where fetal and maternal cells intermingle. The human implantation sites profiled in our study were collected more than 30 years ago and have been stored in liquid nitrogen. We report new high-quality multiomics and spatial data, and developed a statistical framework (StOrder) that describes the complete trophoblast invasion trajectory during the first trimester of pregnancy. This includes the unbiased transcriptomics profile of eEVTs {endovascular extravillous trophoblast cells} that replace the endothelium from the maternal arteries and placental bed GCs {placental bed giant cells}, present deeper in the decidua and the inner third of the myometrium. We use the complete in vivo trophoblast trajectory to benchmark current PTOs {Primary trophoblast organoids} and TSCs {trophoblast stem cells} in vitro trophoblast models and demonstrate that they faithfully recapitulate EVT differentiation. Terminal eEVTs and deep invasive GCs are absent in our in vitro cultures, and we reason that maternal signals from uterine cells and maternal serum are required to generate them.

Our systems biology approach has enabled us to explore potential interactions between EVTs and maternal decidual cells. First, we predict the ligand–receptor interactions between the maternal macrophages and EVT, in keeping with the importance of decidual innate immune cells for placentation32. We further explore the poorly described macrophage–EVT signalling axis in vitro and describe upregulation of motility genes in the EVT subsets. Second, we pinpoint the potential molecular and cellular mediators of arterial transformation during early pregnancy. Interactions between PV1-AOC3 and iEVT { interstitial EVTs} could drive iEVT tropism towards the arterial wall and mediate the destruction of arterial smooth muscle media. eEVTs have a specific ECM that could allow them to form the plug. There are also specific interactions with endothelial cells that enable eEVTs to adhere to them. These novel interactions add to our understanding of the communication between endothelial and eEVT cells44. The effect of defective arterial transformation in the later stages of pregnancy is well-described and underpins the great obstetric syndromes9. Our study increases the understanding of these major pregnancy disorders, all of which have their origins in the first trimester45. In addition, our roadmap of trophoblast differentiation can be used as a blueprint to design improved in vitro models that fully recapitulate the early stages of implantation.

*The trophoblast is the outer layer of cells of the blastocyst. Trophoblasts are present four days after fertilization in humans. They provide nutrients to the embryo and develop into a large part of the placenta.

** The trophectoderm is a layer of cells on the outer edge of a blastocyst*** . These cells provide nutrients for the developing embryo, facilitate implantation into the uterine lining and become part of the placenta.
The trophectoderm begins to form around the 5th day after an egg is fertilized, at the same time as the rest of the blastocyst.
The trophectoderm can also be called the trophoblast or T cells.

It possesses an inner cell mass (ICM) also known as the embryoblast which subsequently forms the embryo, and an outer layer of trophoblast cells called the trophectoderm. 1 2 This layer surrounds the inner cell mass and a fluid-filled cavity (Wikipedia)

The R people who promote restrictions on women's health and on the activities of people whose gender identity is not tied to their biological sex are simply refusing to look at the data and how much one's biological sex means compared to other factors. In fact, there are people who are born with altered hormone levels that truly make them nonbinary — whether that always happens or not, I can't say. Also nonbinary people have been a part of some indigenous cultures for centuries. But the R people only care about carrying guns everywhere they go with no concern for the consequences.

Abortion was a 50/50 issue. Now, it’s Republican quicksand.
Six in 10 voters support legal abortion in most cases. Just over a third want it to be entirely or mostly illegal.
Steven Shepard | 04/08/2023

... a four-point question probably best measures where Americans sit on the issue: legal in all cases, legal in most, illegal in all and illegal in most. The 2022 national exit poll used this device, finding that 29 percent of voters believed abortion should be “legal in all cases,” while another 30 percent thought it should be “legal in most cases.” That left 26 percent who thought it should be “illegal in most cases” and only 10 percent who said it should be “illegal in all cases.”

That leaves roughly six-in-10 voters supporting legal abortion in most cases — with the median voter supporting some restrictions — and just over a third who want it to be entirely or mostly illegal.

...the data is now getting clearer. The Roe v. Wade framework — making abortion mostly legal, but allowing states to impose modest restrictions — is where the majority of American voters are. From the midterms, to Wisconsin, potentially to the 2024 elections, they’re continuing to punish the party that’s straying the furthest from that.

State Abortion Bans May Affect Where Americans Attend College, Poll* Finds—Even Republicans
Alison Durkee | Apr 20, 2023

Key Facts
The study found 72% of enrolled college students say reproductive health laws in their state at least somewhat affect their decision to stay enrolled, including 80% of Democrats and 62% of Republicans.

Of those who say the abortion laws would at least somewhat affect their thinking, an overwhelming 81% of current students say they would be more likely to enroll or stay enrolled at a school in a state “that allowed greater access to reproductive health services.”

That includes 65% of Republicans who said the laws impacted their decisions (as compared with 86% of Democrats and 85% of Independents), suggesting students on both sides of the aisle are affected by state-level abortion bans.

The study was conducted October 26 - November 17, 2022, among 6,008 current students earning associates or bachelors degrees or in certificate or certification programs, and 6,007 unenrolled adults.

Surprising Fact
Men were only slightly less likely than women to say the laws impacted their thinking...

'Immense And Needless Suffering': Idaho’s Abortion Ban Is Creating A Crisis Of Care
The threat of prison time under Idaho's near-total abortion ban is forcing providers to leave the state — and pregnant people are paying the price.
Alanna Vagianos | Apr 26, 2023

...Nearly 50% of maternal health doctors in Idaho are considering leaving the state in the next year, according to a survey conducted by the Idaho Coalition for Safe Reproductive Health Care. An additional 27% responded they are “maybe” considering leaving the state...

This is all insane. The Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade has shaken the crazies out of the trees. No right to abortion under the Constitution? Also no clear right to an appendectomy or a driver’s license.

The Next Front in the GOP’s War on Women: No-Fault Divorce
Steven Crowder is part of a growing right-wing chorus calling for an end to modern divorce laws
May 2, 2023

...Researchers who tracked the emergence of no-fault divorce laws state by state over that period found that reform led to dramatic drops in the rates of female suicide and domestic violence, as well as decreases in spousal homicide of women. The decreases, one researcher explained, were “not just because abused women (and men) could more easily divorce their abusers, but also because potential abusers knew that they were more likely to be left.”

Today, more than two-thirds of all heterosexual divorces in the U.S. are initiated by women.

Republicans across the country are now reconsidering no-fault divorce. There isn’t a huge mystery behind the campaign: Like the crusades against abortion and contraception, making it more difficult to leave an unhappy marriage is about control...

More women sue Texas, asking court to put emergency block on state's abortion law
AMANDA SEITZ AP | Mon, May 22, 2023

...More than a dozen Texas women in total have joined the Center for Reproductive Rights' lawsuit against the state's law, which prohibits abortions unless a mother's life is at risk — an exception that is not clearly defined. Texas doctors who perform abortions risk life in prison and fines of up to $100,000, leaving many women with providers who are unwilling to even discuss terminating a pregnancy.

“Our hope is that it will allow physicians at least a little more comfort when it comes to patients in obstetrical emergencies who really need an abortion where it's going to effect their health, fertility or life going forward,” Molly Duane, the lead attorney on the case, told The Associated Press. “Almost all of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit tell similar stories about their doctors saying, if not for this law, I'd give you an abortion right now.”

...Roughly 25 Texas women have contacted the organization about their own experiences since the initial lawsuit was filed in March.

The women who joined the lawsuit describe being elated about finding out they were pregnant before the experience turned catastrophic...

Republican Nevada governor signs abortion protections legislation

https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/4027996-republican-nevada-governor-sign...

Lombardo, who ousted Democratic incumbent Steve Sisolak as Nevada governor last year, signed legislation Tuesday that codifies a Sisolak executive order banning state agencies from helping out-of-state investigations into abortion patients who are from a different state. The bill will also make sure that medical governing boards and commissions do not discipline those who provide abortions.

Remember how Rs weren't going to jail mothers for abortion?
(ETA: If ever there was a young woman--a teen, not an adult--who needed counsel from medical professionals... This sounds risky for the girl, never mind her advanced pregnancy? Did her mother pressure? Late term abortion, handling of fetus, prison--how can teen emerge unscathed mentally?)

Nebraska teen jailed for illegal disposal of her aborted foetus
Chelsea Bailey | 22 July 2023

A US teenager was sentenced to 90 days in prison after taking abortion pills to end her pregnancy and disposing of the foetus with her mother's help.

Celeste Burgess, now 19, pleaded guilty to illegally concealing human remains after she had an abortion when around 28 weeks pregnant, beyond the 20-week limit then set by Nebraska law.

Her mother, Jessica Burgess, 42, faces up to five years in prison for helping her.

Nebraska now bans abortion at 12 weeks...

>56 margd: This is horrifying. This poor girl and her mother! I can't believe that going to jail is in any way appropriate. They have already suffered enough. I know people who have had to have an abortion and the decision is very painful. This country needs to give them the right to manage their own healthcare and grieve in silence.

Ohio republicans hoping to make it impossible to overturn their anti-abortion agenda went down in flames tonight looks like by about 30 points. Their idea was to raise the bar for overturning legislation from 50% to 60% of legislators and it got crushed. Ohio has been a pretty safe red state for a while. Those who think that the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe isn't still on a lot of people's minds need a reality check. The anti-abortion people do make a lot of noise but they don't represent the majority of voters even in a lot of red states. Makes one wonder whether Ohio possibly will become a swing state again in 2024. Have no doubt our versions of Christian Shariaists will only continue down this road but theirs is a loser's agenda.

Highways are the next antiabortion target. One Texas town is resisting.
A new ordinance, passed in several jurisdictions and under consideration elsewhere, aims to stop people from using local roads to drive someone out of state for an abortion
Caroline Kitchener | September 1, 2023

...Designed by the architects of the state’s “heartbeat” ban that took effect months before Roe fell, ordinances like the one proposed in Llano — where some 80 percent of voters in the county backed President Donald Trump in 2020 — make it illegal to transport anyone to get an abortion on roads within the city or county limits. The laws allow any private citizen to sue a person or organization they suspect of violating the ordinance.

Antiabortion advocates behind the measure are targeting regions along interstates and in areas with airports, with the goal of blocking off the main arteries out of Texas and keeping pregnant women hemmed within the confines of their antiabortion state. These provisions have already passed in two counties and two cities, creating legal risk for those traveling on major highways including Interstate 20 and Route 84, which head toward New Mexico, where abortion remains legal and new clinics have opened to accommodate Texas women. Several more jurisdictions are expected to vote on the measure in the coming weeks.

...While these restrictions appear to violate the U.S. Constitution — which protects a person’s right to travel — they are extremely difficult to challenge in court, said Mary Ziegler, a law professor at the University of California at Davis who focuses on abortion. Because the laws can be enforced by any private citizen, abortion rights groups have no clear government official to sue in a case seeking to block the law...

Judge blocks 2 provisions in North Carolina’s new abortion law

https://www.politico.com/news/2023/09/30/north-carolina-abortion-law-block-00119...

U.S. District Judge Catherine Eagles issued an order halting enforcement of a provision to require surgical abortions that occur after 12 weeks — those for cases of rape and incest, for example — be performed only in hospitals, not abortion clinics. That limitation would have otherwise taken effect on Sunday.
And in the same preliminary injunction, Eagles extended beyond her temporary decision in June an order preventing enforcement of a rule that doctors must document the existence of a pregnancy within the uterus before prescribing a medication abortion.
Short of successful appeals by Republican legislative leaders defending the laws, the order will remain in effect until a lawsuit filed by Planned Parenthood South Atlantic and a physician who performs abortions challenging the sections are resolved. The lawsuit also seeks to have clarified whether medications can be used during the second trimester to induce labor of a fetus that can’t survive outside the uterus.

“We applaud the court’s decision to block a few of the onerous barriers to essential reproductive health care that have no basis in medicine,” said Dr. Beverly Gray, an OB-GYN and a named plaintiff in the case.
