When the state classifies emergency abortions as de facto criminal unless proven otherwise, it deprives patients of “a right to enjoy and defend life and a right to pursue and obtain safety.” The chief justice backed up this conclusion by pointing out that North Dakota expressly permitted abortions to protect life or health in 1887, before it became a state, and preserved this exception in a series of statutes passed after its admission to the union in 1889. The right is thus “deeply rooted in North Dakota’s history and culture,” a key component of “ordered liberty before, during, and at the time of statehood.”

The legislation would create a whole new crime — dubbed “abortion trafficking” — which is defined in the bill as an “adult who, with the intent to conceal an abortion from the parents or guardian of a pregnant, unemancipated minor, either procures an abortion … or obtains an abortion-inducing drug” for the minor. “Recruiting, harboring, or transporting the pregnant minor within this state commits the crime of abortion trafficking,” the legislation adds.
Abortion trafficking would be a felony, and those found guilty would face two to five years in prison. The legislation also includes a statute allowing the Idaho attorney general to supersede any local prosecutor’s decision, preemptively thwarting any prosecutor who vows not to enforce such an extreme law.
Since the bill would criminalize anyone transporting a pregnant minor within the state to get an abortion or to obtain medication abortion, it could apply to an aunt who drives a pregnant minor to the post office to pick up a package that includes abortion pills. Or it could target an older sibling who drives a pregnant minor to a friend’s house to self-manage an abortion at home. Either violation would carry a minimum sentence of two years in prison.
The legislation doesn’t actually say anything about crossing state lines, but Republican lawmakers are creative. Most pregnant people in Idaho are not traveling to obtain an abortion elsewhere in the state, since nearly all abortions are illegal in Idaho; they’re traveling to the border with the intent of crossing state lines, likely into Washington, Oregon or Montana, to get an abortion there...
Most teenagers and adolescents voluntarily include at least one parent in abortion decisions. But for the minority of those who don’t, it’s often for good reason. Studies show that requiring parental involvement can increase the risk of harm or abuse, delay care and lead minors to seek out dangerous alternatives...

Abstract
The relationship between the human placenta—the extraembryonic organ made by the fetus, and the decidua—the mucosal layer of the uterus, is essential to nurture and protect the fetus during pregnancy. Extravillous trophoblast* cells (EVTs) derived from placental villi infiltrate the decidua, transforming the maternal arteries into high-conductance vessels1. Defects in trophoblast invasion and arterial transformation established during early pregnancy underlie common pregnancy disorders such as pre-eclampsia2. Here we have generated a spatially resolved multiomics single-cell atlas of the entire human maternal–fetal interface including the myometrium, which enables us to resolve the full trajectory of trophoblast differentiation. We have used this cellular map to infer the possible transcription factors mediating EVT invasion and show that they are preserved in in vitro models of EVT differentiation from primary trophoblast organoids3,4 and trophoblast stem cells5. We define the transcriptomes of the final cell states of trophoblast invasion: placental bed giant cells (fused multinucleated EVTs) and endovascular EVTs (which form plugs inside the maternal arteries). We predict the cell–cell communication events contributing to trophoblast invasion and placental bed giant cell formation, and model the dual role of interstitial EVTs and endovascular EVTs in mediating arterial transformation during early pregnancy. Together, our data provide a comprehensive analysis of postimplantation trophoblast differentiation that can be used to inform the design of experimental models of the human placenta in early pregnancy.

Discussion
In the postimplantation embryo, trophectoderm* differentiates into trophoblast that invades the uterus to transform the maternal arteries. Defective trophoblast invasion is the primary underlying cause of the great obstetric syndromes that include pre-eclampsia, fetal growth restriction, unexplained stillbirth, placental abruption and preterm labour2. We made use of a historical collection of first-trimester pregnant hysterectomies to delineate the trophoblast landscape at the implantation site, where fetal and maternal cells intermingle. The human implantation sites profiled in our study were collected more than 30 years ago and have been stored in liquid nitrogen. We report new high-quality multiomics and spatial data, and developed a statistical framework (StOrder) that describes the complete trophoblast invasion trajectory during the first trimester of pregnancy. This includes the unbiased transcriptomics profile of eEVTs {endovascular extravillous trophoblast cells} that replace the endothelium from the maternal arteries and placental bed GCs {placental bed giant cells}, present deeper in the decidua and the inner third of the myometrium. We use the complete in vivo trophoblast trajectory to benchmark current PTOs {Primary trophoblast organoids} and TSCs {trophoblast stem cells} in vitro trophoblast models and demonstrate that they faithfully recapitulate EVT differentiation. Terminal eEVTs and deep invasive GCs are absent in our in vitro cultures, and we reason that maternal signals from uterine cells and maternal serum are required to generate them.
Our systems biology approach has enabled us to explore potential interactions between EVTs and maternal decidual cells. First, we predict the ligand–receptor interactions between the maternal macrophages and EVT, in keeping with the importance of decidual innate immune cells for placentation32. We further explore the poorly described macrophage–EVT signalling axis in vitro and describe upregulation of motility genes in the EVT subsets. Second, we pinpoint the potential molecular and cellular mediators of arterial transformation during early pregnancy. Interactions between PV1-AOC3 and iEVT { interstitial EVTs} could drive iEVT tropism towards the arterial wall and mediate the destruction of arterial smooth muscle media. eEVTs have a specific ECM that could allow them to form the plug. There are also specific interactions with endothelial cells that enable eEVTs to adhere to them. These novel interactions add to our understanding of the communication between endothelial and eEVT cells44. The effect of defective arterial transformation in the later stages of pregnancy is well-described and underpins the great obstetric syndromes9. Our study increases the understanding of these major pregnancy disorders, all of which have their origins in the first trimester45. In addition, our roadmap of trophoblast differentiation can be used as a blueprint to design improved in vitro models that fully recapitulate the early stages of implantation.

The R people who promote restrictions on women's health and on the activities of people whose gender identity is not tied to their biological sex are simply refusing to look at the data and how much one's biological sex means compared to other factors. In fact, there are people who are born with altered hormone levels that truly make them nonbinary — whether that always happens or not, I can't say. Also nonbinary people have been a part of some indigenous cultures for centuries. But the R people only care about carrying guns everywhere they go with no concern for the consequences.

“Our hope is that it will allow physicians at least a little more comfort when it comes to patients in obstetrical emergencies who really need an abortion where it's going to effect their health, fertility or life going forward,” Molly Duane, the lead attorney on the case, told The Associated Press. “Almost all of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit tell similar stories about their doctors saying, if not for this law, I'd give you an abortion right now.”

Ohio republicans hoping to make it impossible to overturn their anti-abortion agenda went down in flames tonight looks like by about 30 points. Their idea was to raise the bar for overturning legislation from 50% to 60% of legislators and it got crushed. Ohio has been a pretty safe red state for a while. Those who think that the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe isn't still on a lot of people's minds need a reality check. The anti-abortion people do make a lot of noise but they don't represent the majority of voters even in a lot of red states. Makes one wonder whether Ohio possibly will become a swing state again in 2024. Have no doubt our versions of Christian Shariaists will only continue down this road but theirs is a loser's agenda.

Antiabortion advocates behind the measure are targeting regions along interstates and in areas with airports, with the goal of blocking off the main arteries out of Texas and keeping pregnant women hemmed within the confines of their antiabortion state. These provisions have already passed in two counties and two cities, creating legal risk for those traveling on major highways including Interstate 20 and Route 84, which head toward New Mexico, where abortion remains legal and new clinics have opened to accommodate Texas women. Several more jurisdictions are expected to vote on the measure in the coming weeks.

And in the same preliminary injunction, Eagles extended beyond her temporary decision in June an order preventing enforcement of a rule that doctors must document the existence of a pregnancy within the uterus before prescribing a medication abortion.
Short of successful appeals by Republican legislative leaders defending the laws, the order will remain in effect until a lawsuit filed by Planned Parenthood South Atlantic and a physician who performs abortions challenging the sections are resolved. The lawsuit also seeks to have clarified whether medications can be used during the second trimester to induce labor of a fetus that can’t survive outside the uterus.
