I hated The Kite Runner, so naturally I assumed this would be just as bad for me. This story was more enjoyable though, there were less predictable twists in this story and more interesting story lines. The characters were confusing in the beginning of the novel though. Part One is all about Mariam. Part two is all about Laila. Part three has a combination of them, which is what I had expected from the beginning and would have possibly made the story easier to understand. Overall, this is a book that was not great, but also not that bad. It had strengths as well as weaknesses and it was one of the better books I have been forced to read during school. Another audio book read. Wonderful voice - both the author and the reader. This one left me with a good feeling, though I can't recall anything about it. Here's what I wrote in 2008 about this read: "Hosseini again brings war-torn Afghanistan to his Western readers, this time via the tale of two women and the families and environment around them. Life is hard for these women, with few rights and few joys; fulfillment and joy seems totally dependent on the characters and temperment of the men around them. "
Hosseini doesn’t seem entirely comfortable writing about the inner lives of women and often resorts to stock phrases. Yet Hosseini succeeds in carrying readers along because he understands the power of emotion as few other popular writers do. Anyone whose heart strings were pulled by Khaled Hosseini's first, hugely successful novel, The Kite Runner, should be more than satisfied with this follow-up. Hosseini is skilled at telling a certain kind of story, in which events that may seem unbearable - violence, misery and abuse - are made readable.
