I don’t know any character names but here’s the plot, I read it about 5 years ago in 2015/6th grade-
Main female character arrived at a boarding school which she got a full scholarship too in a succession of black cars. She meets a boy who is considered the odd one on campus that no one ever talks too, but she quickly befriends him. Then she meets a boy who is a several generation legacy and they have a sort-of love at first sight moment. There is an animosity between her love interest and her friend. There is also a set of twins (boy and girl) that are significant to the plot. Anyways, the main girl and her love interest sneak out at night to the art studio where she paints his back. However, they almost get caught so they split up and run in different directions. The main girl ends up being shoved down a well and killed. She then finds out that her love interest can’t see her, and she has an existential crisis. However, the next day she goes down to a sort of catacomb system under the school where there are cafes and a couple of student hang out spaces. Soon after, her friend sees her and tells her to move away from where she is because he sometimes sees ghosts/people there. It is later explained that he can see the ghosts wherever one of them died, like cold spots. The main girl is so caught up in him seeing her that she doesn’t immediately move but when she does, her friend realizes she is dead. They then distinguish that the reason she looked so solid was she hadn’t yet interacted with the outside world, and the fading of ghosts signified their fading spirits. The main girl then leads her friend to the well where she was pushed to see if he could find anything. He couldn’t, so they end up leaving and running into the love interest. As mentioned there is a sort of animosity between the two guys and they immediately butt heads as the friend tries to explain to the love interest that the main girl had been killed. The love interest doesn’t really believe until the main girl uses some of her life force to fog up a window and write on it with her finger. Soon after the friend is taken away by the police because his fingerprints were found on the well. The love interest and the main girl then research her death and found out that several other suspicious deaths had taken place in the past every ten years (ex. 1925, 1935, 1945, 1955, etc.). This whole time as the main girl is traveling around the school and it’s grounds she meets a couple of ghosts. Several were killed in the main garden, there is one particular ghost of an older mother which seems to scare all the ghosts of the female students, and there are a couple more with mentioned deaths. One of these ghosts was drowned in a lake by two boys in the early 1900s (she was wearing a full body swimsuit but still felt underclothes around them). Another is a hippie holding a sign in the woods beyond the lake where the above mentioned girl was killed. The girl who was killed in the catacombs was given some sort of drug like LSD and then had her knock broken. Yet another girl was hung from a chandelier in the main foyer of the school after being an incident where there the student body sexually assaulted her. These ghosts become important later when the main girl finds out that the boy of the set of twins was the one that killed her. She finds this out when her love interest confronts the boy because they were supposed to be friends/allies due to social status. It turns out that they both belong to a secret society/cult on campus which sacrifices one student every 10 years in order to make the rest of the student body extraordinarily successful. This sacrificial ritual binds the souls of the students that were killed to the campus, and they could never leave. The twin admits to killing the main girl because he thought that the love interest was too good for her and that he had initially had another target. The main girl then tries to stop the ritual that would bind her to the campus and the rest of the student ghosts, empathizing with her, try to help her. The older lady ghost then sacrifices what’s left of her soul to make them successful. It turned out that the older lady ghost was burned to death with her children in the cellar of the founder of the school’s home as they were married. The main girl then successfully interrupts the smoke ceremony which would keep her to the campus by pushing the twin boy into the fire. This unlocks all the ghosts from their metaphysical chains and they could all decide on whether to leave and move on or stay. The main girl decided to stay and the ending of the book is her celebrating her 1st death day/anniversary with her friend who had been released from police custody and her love interest.
