How to be Human touches on some of the markers of 21st-century living: the time-sucking, ubiquitous smartphones and social media obsessions. Of selfies and the culture of narcissism and instant gratification, Wax is unequivocal. "Our suffering is directly related to our self-involvement; that sense of never having enough and demanding what we want when we want it, which is now." According to Wax, we have moved so far from our community-based hunter-gatherer forebears that we have ditched "we" for "me". How we can possibly find our way back is something that is explored in her book. "when Wax writes in semi-Freudian style – revealing her own hidden family tragedies – she offers us something profound. Indeed, at the very end of her book, she relates how her Austrian parents escaped from the Nazis, while many of her relatives ended up in concentration camps. This all too brief but highly compelling chapter alone justifies the purchase of this book. And this account moves us, because Wax narrates a deeply private, painful story in simple words, confident that many will listen with sensitivity."
In How to be Human, Ruby Wax tries to come up with some answers to that niggling question about how we can learn to like and love ourselves. With the input of a Buddhist monk (an expert on our inner lives) and a neuroscientist (an expert on the brain), Ruby explores how to find happiness in the modern world - despite the constant bombardment of bad news, the need to choose between 5,000 different types of toothpaste, and the loneliness of having hundreds of friends who we've never met and don't know us. Filled with witty anecdotes from Ruby's own life, and backed up by scientific authority, How to be Human is the only guide you need for building a healthy, happy relationship with yourself.
