Emma and Bobby Ross have the perfect loving family with twin daughters, Lily and Zoe. They all live in a ritzy hotel in Miami that is owned by their family. This idyllic life is shattered after Zoe attends a party with her high school friends. A week later while celebrating the twins fifteenth birthday Emma learns of a shocking video that has gone viral of Zoe. The aftermath stresses the entire Ross family with embarrassing scandalous attention and unknown ramifications.

Each family member has a different reaction to the scandal. Bobby seeks revenge against the person who posted the video. He is angry and unable to provide emotional support to his family in the midst of the investigation. Emma is concerned for her daughters’ emotional state and how she will cope at school. This event also becomes the catalyst to address problems that she has kept buried for years. This instability wreaks havoc on the family dynamics and they need to make major changes to move forward.

Somebody’s Daughter highlights an important topic which explores the growing use of technology by teens. The use of computers, phones, and social media can be greatly beneficial but when used improperly there is the potential for abuse. This was the first book that I read by Rochelle B. Weinstein and I look forward to more novels by this author. ( )

I received this book from kindle free giveaway through Goodreads. I was not sure what to expect but I have to say it was an interesting story that centered around a teenager making a mistake in a world where nothing is private any longer. One mistake (and we all make mistakes) can haunt you for life and it can pull families apart or make them stronger. This is a book every parent with teenagers should read, it is an eye opener but it is reality. ( )

This is a story on social media and how one picture, one text, one video can change the life of not only the person/people in the video but the family of that person also. I found this story so realistic to the teenage world today. One video was take of sweet 15 year old Zoe and her whole world was changed. Her school life was extremely tough with all the peer judgment. Her home life was hard due to her parents, father especially, not know how to deal with it. Everything she did or thought was called into question. At the end of this drama it was amazing to see the family and their friends come together stronger than they started.

The characters in this story are so real. The mother trying to be understanding, the father wanting to control the situation, the sister just wanting to protect, and the person videoed (I want to say victim but she wasn’t portrayed as such) not knowing who to trust. I could see this happening to many families and having the same reactions as this family. The mother is the hero. She doesn’t give up on anyone, she doesn’t accept that there is no way back from this, and she never stops loving her family.

The side story didn’t seem to add as much to the story as I thought it might. The secret the mother holds onto adds a small twist but doesn’t change my feelings towards the book. With or without the side story this is an eye-opening, conversation starting, and heart breaking/heartwarming story. I think it is a great read for a young adult as it can teach a life lesson and a good read for parents so their eyes are opened as to the world of teenage texting and videoing.

Somebody’s Daughter is not a WOW book, but it is a book that will make you take stock of your life, appreciate the little things, and maybe understand your children a little better. ( )

Emma and Bobby Ross live a picture perfect life. They have twin daughters, Lily and Zoe, who are each excelling at school. Their marriage is a story of high school sweethearts still together and going strong many years later. Together they run a successful Miami Beach hotel known for its long standing presence in the community.

On the night of the twin’s fifteenth birthday party the facade of perfection comes breaking down around the Ross family. Someone has released a video of Zoe and a male classmate that bring a private moment in to the limelight. The video quickly goes viral and Zoe and her family become the talk of the town. This scandal tears at the seams of the Ross family and challenges them to be able to overcome the shame this incident has brought upon them. Can the Ross family rise above this scandal or will it tear them apart?

SOMEBODY’S DAUGHTER is a story of the impact of social media on the lives of today’s youth and those closest to them. Zoe made one simple mistake in an act not out of the norm for a teenager. This should be something that stays behind the scenes and never sees the light of day, but thanks to today’s technology and the ease with which things become viral, this mistake quickly spirals. Emma Ross, Zoe’s mother, has a secret of her own that adds another layer of pain to Weinstein’s story. Together these two events weave together to thoroughly test the bonds of the Ross family. While I tend to stick within the reading realm of crime fiction/mystery/thriller, every once in a while I feel the need to step out of my comfort zone and try something else. When my fabulous reading club, Nerdy by Nature, was offered SOMEBODY’S DAUGHTER as a chance to read and discuss with the author, I couldn’t say no. Social media is something that impacts every single one of us in the world, no matter how much we try to avoid it. Weinstein’s story is on that is relevant and relatable to families all around the globe.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was refreshing. The characters are not perfect and they handle their imperfections with a sense of humor. The subject matter is painful, and I felt the appropriate sense of the struggle o being married for a long period of time and then having the rug pulled out from under you. But this book is written in such a way that you can relate to the sadness but understand the humor as well. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good storyline along with a sense of humor. ( )
